Sick season is almost upon us! This time of year, I focus on boosting our immunity with staples like elderberry, bone broth, and a daily spoonful of fire cider. I'm also ensuring that I have my go-to essential oils ready to support us when those pesky bugs inevitably come around!
Aromatherapy can be a soothing ally in alleviating symptoms of cold and flu. Essential oils like Eucalyptus and Peppermint can help clear nasal congestion, making it easier to breathe. Lavender and Tea Tree oil have antiviral and antibacterial properties potentially aiding in the body’s defense against illness. Inhalation of these oils through diffusers or steam inhalation can provide relief from headaches and promote relaxation. Additionally, the calming scents can help reduce stress and anxiety, which often accompany illness, fostering a more restful environment conducive to healing and enhancing overall well-being during recovery.
Recommended essential oils to support well-being during cold & flu season
Tea Tree
Extensive studies have shown Tea Tree to be effective against bacteria, fungus and viral pathogens. It acts as a broad-spectrum disinfectant and therefore beneficial when added to surface cleaner for wiping door handles and keeping surfaces clean.
Peppermint
Due to the chemical component 1,8 Cineole found in eucalyptus essential oil research has shown that this essential oil helps to clear congestion and reduces mucus during bouts of respiratory illnesses. It is a powerful respiratory tonic and pain reliever, especially when paired with Peppermint essential oil. Not recommended to use on or around children under 3 years of age.
Niaouli
In my opinion, the best essential oil to use for sinus congestion. Add 1 drops per 5ml of carrier oil and apply gentle strokes, starting at the crest of the nostril draining outwards to ears. This will help to drain excess mucus from sinuses. (this dilution rate is 1% which is recommended strength of dilution for facial application of essential oils)
Myrtle
Part of the Myrtaceae family, myrtle is a gentle yet powerful essential oil. Its unique chemical structure makes it milder than eucalyptus and therefore a more suitable essential oil to use on children over the age of 3 to help support respiratory health. I diffuse 2 drops per 100ml of water in my children's bedroom 30 minutes before bed. I find this helps to loosen nasal congestion.
Lemon
A bright and uplifting essential oil. Due to the chemical constituent d-limolene, Lemon has anti-inflammatory properties, as well as antibacterial and antimicrobial. I love diffusing lemon in the morning for its uplifting and inspiring effects on mood, as well as its support for the respiratory health.
Cinnamon
A 2018 study found that vapors of cinnamon oil inhibited the growth of respiratory pathogens like Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae in a petri dish.[ Research: PMC:6064118]. Not recommended to use on or around children under 3 years of age.
